It’s exciting to start talking about publishing your book. In all of the excitement of the potential of holding your book in your hand, authors always ask, “How long will it take me to get from manuscript to published book?” Truthfully, it depends.
But it doesn’t have to be confusing. With the right plan and the right team, the process can move smoothly, and you can enjoy the ride, even if you’re asking “Are we there yet?” along the way.
Let’s assume you’ve already written your manuscript. From that point, the full self-publishing process usually takes somewhere between 4 to 12 weeks. The timeline really depends on how prepared you are and how much help you need along the way. That’s where Pinpoint comes in. We walk with authors through every step of the journey. From the raw Word doc to a book you can hold in your hands.
The first step is editing. Depending on the level of editing your book needs, this part can take anywhere from two to four weeks. Developmental edits, copy edits, and proofreading all serve different purposes, but each one helps your message come across clearly and professionally. A good edit protects your reputation and sets the tone for everything else.
How long the editing can also depend on you. We know most authors are working other jobs and have other responsibilities. Once we send edits over, the ball is in your court. How long that takes is completely dependent on you and your schedule.
Once your manuscript is clean, you move into formatting and design. This is where your book starts to feel real. Interior layout and cover design typically take about two to three weeks, especially when you already have a trim size in mind and a clear sense of the look you’re going for. And if you don’t? That’s okay too. Pinpoint can help you define the vision and make creative decisions that match your message.
After formatting comes proofing and approvals. You’ll get a chance to review everything one final time and catch any small changes that might have slipped through. It’s tempting to rush here, but we always recommend taking the time to sit with it. A fresh pair of eyes or a little bit of distance can make a huge difference.
Once everything is approved, we move into publishing setup. Whether you’re launching on Amazon KDP, IngramSpark, or both, we guide you through setting up your author account, choosing your categories, pricing your book, and uploading your final files. Depending on the platform, your book can go live within a few days.
So how long does it really take? If you’re organized and ready to move forward, six to eight weeks is a solid average. If you need a little more time or feedback along the way, you’re probably looking at closer to eight to twelve weeks. There’s no right or wrong timeline. There’s just your timeline. And the goal isn’t to publish fast, it’s to publish well.
At Pinpoint, we don’t just check boxes or hand you templates. We partner with you to take your story seriously, to steward it with excellence, and to make sure you’re proud of the final product. Whether you need help with editing, typesetting, cover design, ebook formatting, or publishing setup, we’re here to walk you through it all.
If you’re thinking about self-publishing, let’s talk. We’d love to help you map out your timeline and take the guesswork out of the process.
With the right guidance, there will come a day you will ask, “Are we there yet?”, and the answer will simply be, “YES!”.
